Mahjong Night Essentials: The Complete Checklist

A great mahjong night looks effortless from the outside. Behind that is a short, boring checklist that a good host runs without thinking. Here it is, so you can run it too, and so nothing sends you scrambling five minutes before people arrive.

The non-negotiables

  • Four players. The whole game is built for four. If you're new to gathering a table, our beginner's guide has tips on where to find players.
  • A set of tiles. Any American set (152 tiles, Jokers included) works. Borrow or share while you're new, more on that in mahjong for beginners.
  • This year's card, one per player. Everyone needs the current NMJL card to play. Grab the 2026 card if you haven't.
  • Racks. One per player, to hold tiles and prop the card. These usually come with a set.

The gear that makes it good

You can play without these. You won't want to.

  • A game cloth. The single best upgrade, quiets the tiles, protects the table, defines each player's space. See the game cloth guide to choose.
  • A card holder. Keeps the card flat, clean and findable all year.
  • A set of coasters. Because drinks and tiles share a table.
  • A tote. One home for the whole kit, so it travels together and you're always ready.

The host's extras

  • Graze-able food, one-handed so nobody stops the game.
  • One batched cocktail, plus wine and something non-alcoholic.
  • A warm playlist, set before anyone arrives.
  • A parting touch, a mug or a bandana at each seat turns a game into an occasion.

The one-purchase starting point

If you're building your kit from scratch, start with the surface. A game cloth does more for the feel of a night than anything else at its price, and everything else can follow over time. Browse the essentials in our Accessories collection, or see the whole picture in Curated.

Frequently asked questions

What do you need for a mahjong night?

At minimum: four players, a set of tiles, one current card per player, and racks. To make it genuinely good, add a game cloth, a card holder, coasters, and a bag to carry it all.

What's the most important thing to buy first?

A game cloth. It improves the sound, the look, and the comfort of every game, and it travels flat to any table.

Do all four players need their own card?

Yes. Each player references the card constantly during a hand, so everyone needs their own current copy.

How do I put together a mahjong night kit as a gift?

A game cloth, coasters, and a card holder make a lovely starter kit. See our gift guide for ready-made combinations.
